How to Support Your Body When You Drink Alcohol
In a previous post I outlined a number of different ways alcohol can effect our body. These are the things I tend to grab and ensure I support myself for a night of drinking.
MAGNESIUM: magnesium is burned through and utilized when we drink alcohol and during times of stress. Our soils our depleted of magnesium, less content in our foods, many of us are deficient in this mineral. Magnesium is needed for many enzymatic and cellular functions. Its important to support magnesium levels especially when we drink.
VITAMIN C: alcohol can be oxidative. Acetaldehyde is the by product of alcohol metabolism, this chemical is what gives us the hangover feeling. Vitamin c is an antioxidant and has been shown to offset the effects of acetaldehyde.
BINDER: binders can mop up and bind to any negative metabolites that may be floating around in our body after consuming alcohol (I take this right before going to bed after drinking).
TUDCA OR: supportive of the liver as it helps stimulate bile and also protective against mitochondrial dysfunction.
DANDELION TINCUTRE: dandelion provides us with so many benefits liver supportive as it stimulates bile, acts as a digestive bitter, anti inflammatory.
PROTEIN RICH MEALS: the foods and juices we pair with drinking are often high in sugars or refined carbohydrates which can lead to a spike in blood sugar followed by a crash in blood sugar. (you might notice you wake up in the middle of the night with a burst of energy after drinking and this could be why). Having enough protein in meals before and after drinking will help stabilize blood sugar levels.
ANTIOXIDANT SMOOTHIE: alcohol is oxidative, introducing antioxidants into the body first thing the following morning can be very supportive. (I have an antioxidant smoothie in a reel on instagram).
COCONUT WATER + PINCH OF SALT: its important to replenish minerals/electrolytes after drinking, coconut water is rich in potassium and the pinch of salt will add sodium.
